After a breakup do people just say stuff to make the other person feel better?

This is especially for the woman, after a breakup do you say stuff just to make the guy who you broke up with feel better, I was with a perfect match, soulmate, me and Angie were very happy together, but she broke up with me because me and her moved into a Duplex that needed alot of work, all the problems got to her and she broke up with me, she told me that she wanted to start out a new life, but she evidently told the landlord that later on she wanted to be back with me, I take it as if she is just saying stuff.
